I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to go to Stanford University with Jessica Jackley (co-founder of Kiva.org) to give a short presentation and to attend a workshop that was done by none other than the world famous Nancy Duarte! She wrote the bookSlide:ology and she runs Duarte Designs which is one of the largest design firms in Silicon Valley and is one of the few agencies in the world focused solely on presentations, whether they are delivered in person, online or via mobile device. Her company does the presentations for TED and they also are responsible for Al Gore's Inconvenient Truthpresentation that he took home the Nobel Prize for. So yeah, this woman knows what she's doing for sure!
What I learned:
• There is a major difference between a “slide” and a “document”
• There are a variety of ways to visually represent complex ideas that do not require a lot of text
• Slides should serve as a visual aid, not as notecards
• It should only take the audience 3-4 seconds to process all the information on the slide. If it takes longer than that, you should re-think the slide
• It’s best to start drafting ideas on paper instead of on the computer because it will be more creative and authentic
• Use keynote over powerpoint if you can
