On 26 March B.E. 2569, the Forest Guardians Project held a workshop with Chiang Mai University, the Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO), the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC), the Royal Forest Department and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation to design financial tools for supporting long-term community forest stewardship. These cover the PES process already being implemented by the Project, a provincial-level carbon stock mechanism and Sustainability-Linked Bonds at the level of local government organisations.
Bringing academic institutions and government agencies at both provincial and departmental levels into the design process from the outset lays the groundwork for the financial tools developed to be connected to government policies and budgets in practice in the future. This builds on the PES mechanism, which has been piloted with 42 communities in 6 northern provinces throughout the year.
